How a casino shoe starts
The Massachusetts rules and pagat.com describe the same opening ritual:
- The decks are shuffled together and cut.
- The cut card is inserted and the decks go into the shoe.
- The dealer turns the first card face up for everyone to see.
- That card’s value decides how many further cards are burned, discarded unseen.
- Play begins with the next card.
The cut card and the last hand
When the cut card appears, the Massachusetts rules have the dealer set it aside, then follow three steps:
- Finish the hand in progress.
- Announce “last hand” and play one more.
- Replace the cards with new decks.
