PH888 Baccarat Natural and the Third-Card Rules
Baccarat drawing rules are fixed: if either hand has a natural 8 or 9, nobody draws.
- PH888 Card Shoe at the Baccarat Table, Explained
- A card shoe is the box that holds several shuffled decks at a baccarat table so the dealer can deal one card at a time.
- PH888 Baccarat Banker Commission, No-Commission Tables and Pairs
- The baccarat Banker bet backs the hand that acts last under the drawing rules, which gives it a slight edge.
- PH888 Betting System Maths
- The martingale system doubles your stake after every loss so that one win recovers everything plus one starting unit.
A baccarat natural, a total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards, ends a round on the spot, and every other round follows a fixed third-card table, so the game needs no decisions once bets are placed. Learn the table once and you can follow any live round, including the baccarat tables in the PH888 Live tab. How those streamed tables run is covered on the live dealer online casino guide.
Card values first
Per pagat.com’s baccarat rules:
- Cards 2 to 9 count their face value.
- Aces count 1.
- Tens and face cards count zero.
- A hand’s total is the last digit of the sum, so 7 plus 8 makes 15, which counts as 5.
The baccarat natural rule
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s published baccarat rules start with one line: if either hand is a natural, no more cards are dealt to either hand.
| First two cards total | Result |
|---|---|
| 8 or 9 in either hand | natural: the round ends, no third card |
| 0 to 7 in both hands | the drawing rules below apply |
The Player’s third card
When neither hand is a natural, the Player hand acts first, per the same rules:
| Player’s first two cards | Action |
|---|---|
| 0 to 5 | draws a third card |
| 6 or 7 | stands |
The Banker’s third card: 7 totals in one table
If the Player stood, the Banker draws on 5 or less and stands on 6 or 7. If the Player drew, the Banker follows this table from the Massachusetts rules:
| Banker’s first two cards | Banker draws when Player’s third card is |
|---|---|
| 0, 1, 2 | always draws |
| 3 | any card except 8 |
| 4 | 2 to 7 |
| 5 | 4 to 7 |
| 6 | 6 or 7 |
| 7 | stands |
| 8, 9 | natural, neither hand draws |
No hand ever takes more than one extra card.
Why the rules matter to a bettor
Because Banker acts last and with more information, the rules tilt slightly in its favour, which is why a Banker win usually carries a 5% commission; the baccarat banker bet page explains it. The rules also mean past rounds tell you nothing about the next, which is the flaw at the heart of any doubling system, shown on the martingale system page. The house edge definition shows how a small tilt becomes a cost per round.
FAQ
When does the Player draw a third card in baccarat?
When neither hand has a natural and the Player's first two cards total 0 to 5. On 6 or 7 the Player stands.
When does the Banker always draw?
On a total of 0, 1 or 2, unless either hand has a natural. On 7 the Banker always stands.
Can anyone decide to draw or stand?
No. The drawing rules are fixed, so the dealer simply applies them; bettors choose only Player, Banker or Tie.
