The baccarat Banker bet backs the hand that acts last under the drawing rules, which gives it a slight edge.

The baccarat banker commission, 5% of every Banker win at a standard table, is the reason the most popular bet at most live tables is not free money. Banker does not mean the casino: it is simply one of the two hands, and it happens to act last under the drawing rules. The baccarat tables in the PH888 Live tab follow this standard, and the live dealer online casino guide explains how a streamed round runs.

Why the Banker hand has a slight edge

Under the fixed drawing rules, the Player hand decides first and the Banker hand responds, drawing or standing according to its own total and the Player’s third card. That extra information makes Banker win slightly more often than Player over a shoe. A 1 to 1 payout on both would therefore favour Banker bettors, so tables charge a commission instead, 5% of the win under the Massachusetts rules.

Baccarat banker commission: the 5% rule

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s baccarat rules state the standard plainly:

BetPays
Player1 to 1
Banker1 to 1, less a 5% commission on the amount won
Tieat least 8 to 1

Worked example, with round numbers: you bet ₱200 on Banker and Banker wins. The win is ₱200, the commission is 5% of that, ₱10, so you collect your ₱200 stake plus ₱190.

No-commission tables

Evolution’s No Commission Baccarat takes a different route:

  1. A Banker win pays 1 to 1 with no commission.
  2. The exception: a Banker win with a total of 6 pays half the bet, 0.5 to 1.
  3. Player and the other bets are unaffected.

Instead of a small charge on every Banker win, you take a large cut on one specific result. Read the table name and its rules screen before you assume which version you are at.

Banker pair, baccarat pairs and other side bets

A banker pair bet wins when the Banker’s first two cards are a pair of the same rank. It is a separate wager from Banker itself, and its payout and edge are set by the table, so check the rules screen. Evolution’s own baccarat page lists pairs side bets among its extras. Side bets usually carry a higher edge than the main bets; the house edge meaning page shows how to compare them.

Banker streaks and the shoe

Evolution’s Multiplay view can sort its baccarat tables by longest streak, but a run of Banker wins says nothing about the next hand; each round is dealt from what remains in the card shoe, under the same fixed rules. Betting systems that chase streaks or double after losses run into the problems shown on the martingale system page.
